How to choose the right mattress

The mattress market is full of confusing marketing. This guide cuts through the noise — written by Darius Kiaulakis, Sleep Ambassador and mattress technologist. In the mattress business since 2007, he founded MattressCenter in Vilnius in 2009 — over 17 years building and testing mattresses by hand.

1. How to choose firmness

Firmness is the most important factor. Most people make the mistake of choosing based on what feels comfortable in a showroom — but a 5-minute test is not sleep.

Firmness Best for Weight range
1–2 (Soft / Medium-Soft)Side sleepers, under 65 kg, pressure point issues< 65 kg
3 (Medium)Most sleepers — best default choice60–90 kg
4 (Medium-Firm)Back/stomach sleepers, heavier bodies, back pain80–110 kg
5 (Firm)Heavyweight, orthopaedic needs, hospital beds> 110 kg
"Over 17 years, the #1 complaint I hear from people who bought without advice: "it felt fine in the shop." Firmness on a cold mattress feels 30% firmer than after 15 minutes of body heat." — Darius K.

2. Mattress materials compared

Each material has specific trade-offs. Here is the honest comparison from someone who builds all of them.

Material Pros Cons Price range
Memory foam Body-conforming, silent, pressure relief Retains heat, slow response €190–€350
Natural latex Breathable, durable (15yr), hypoallergenic Higher cost, heavier €290–€600
Hybrid Spring support + foam comfort, cool sleep Heavier, more complex production €340–€700
Coconut fibre Natural, firm, great for back pain Hard to soften once made €240–€450

3. Which size should you choose?

In Lithuania the most popular single size is 90×200 cm. For couples, 160×200 cm is standard. But standard sizes exist for historical reasons — not because they fit everyone.

4. Best mattress by sleep position

Side sleeper

Soft–Medium (2–3). Hip and shoulder relief is essential.

Back sleeper

Medium–Firm (3–4). Lumbar support prevents lower back pain.

Stomach sleeper

Firm (4–5). Prevents your hips from sinking and straining your spine.

5. Budget vs quality: the honest truth

A mattress you sleep on 8 hours/night for 10 years costs as little as €0.07/night at €260. The question is not "can I afford a good mattress" — it is "can I afford poor sleep for a decade?"

Budget below €150: you are probably buying a foam block that will sag in 2–3 years. Budget €250–450: solid quality that lasts 8–12 years. Budget €500+: premium materials, worth it for heavy or demanding sleepers.
